Frequently Asked Questions

Why a Pro-Choice License Plate?

Florida citizens have the right to have their view points expressed on a Florida License Plate. Florida is in a particularly precarious situation when it comes to reproductive rights, especially for teens. Florida has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country and is rated among the worst for access to contraception.

How was the design chosen?

Orlando NOW sponsored a design contest—open to any artist across the country. The top three entries were chosen by a panel of NOW members; those entries were then posted on the website where anyone could vote on the design.

How much is the application fee to the State of Florida?

The State of Florida charges a $60,000 application fee for new plates. Personal donations are needed to pay this submission fee. If you can afford to help, please donate now:

What other criteria must be met before the plate can be accepted?

The other criteria that must be met before the plate can be approved are that we indicate 30,000 Florida drivers intend to purchase the plate if the state approves it. This can be done by petition or random sample. We also have to get a legislative sponsor for the plate to take it to Tallahassee; once it's there it has to be voted on by our elected officials.

What does the petition say and what information does it require of signers?

The Petition reads as follows:

I, the undersigned, agree that I intend to purchase a United for Choice specialty license plate for an additional annual use fee of $20, plus a $2.00 processing fee, if the proposed plate is approved. I agree that my name, telephone number, county of residence, Florida license plate number or Florida driver license number can be provided to the Department of Highway Sand Motor Vehicles with the results of this petition survey. I certify that I am the legal owner/leasee of a motor vehicle registered in the state of Florida with the Florida license plate number or Florida driver license number as provided with my signature below and that my vehicle is eligible for a specialty license plate. Signers must provide their name, county, phone number and either their current license plate number or their Florida driver’s license number.

How are the proceeds for the plate going to be spent?

Our plate will endow funds to empower women and men to take control of their reproductive lives. We will fund grants for comprehensive sex education, and give women better access to contraception.
